Kinja'd!!!

Artsy GT350R for your time and/or money.

So, I posted in January (maybe?) about getting a summer job at the Porsche place where my brother worked the summers before his senior (HS) and freshman (college) years (I’ll be a junior in August). Well, I haven’t heard anything back from them and I sent that email a looooooong time ago. My brothers thinks that the guy who runs the place really only lets customers’ kids work there now. Oh well, I guess it was kind of a long shot anyway. However, I’ve applied at two retail places and a Chick-fil-a by my house as well, and I haven’t heard back from any of them. It’s been weeks since I applied, and complete radio silence. Then, someone at my school who works in communications offered me an internship this summer, but they don’t know whether they will have the money to do it or not. And since Blipshift didn’t pick up my design (*sad trombone*), it looks right now like I’m only going to get any money from mowing my yard and my grandparents’. This is my first experience attempting to get any employment, and so far, it’s not going very well. You could buy my shirt on Redbubble (pls do) but I only get paid $20 at a time, so it’s not like that’s anything close to being a steady source. I’ve been on RB for more than a year a half, and I’ve made a grand total of maybe $35, only $21 of which I’ve actually received. *sigh* Who knows, maybe someone will call back but it’s not looking that way right now.

Have you followed up on any of your potential jobs? A lot of times simply filling out an application isn’t going to be enough, employers want to hire people motivated and interested to get the position. If not, get dressed up all pretty (dress shirt, nice pants and shoes) and go to the place and ask to speak to the manager in person about your application. Just doing that puts you miles ahead of the idiots who normally apply to those kinds of place.

Do what SVTtyler said!!! Also temp agencies are a good way to get summer employment. They typically have a wide variety of jobs at absolute shit pay.

Okay, that helps. Honestly I’m just really ignorant of how to do any of this haha. Although I already did that at CFA and they said I had to apply again online, which I did.

I second the follow-up motion. If they don’t acknowledge your application within a couple of days, you can simply ask (politely) for confirmation whether they’ve got it, and use the opportunity to get an idea of the decision time frame, and to make yourself look good (motivation is often key).
If you get an ‘application received’ message, follow up about two weeks after that. If they haven’t yet made a decision, ask if they have an estimate of when they’ll decide, and get in touch again around that time.

Larger corporations will probably be the same since way since that’s kind of how stuff is now, really just depends on the place you’re looking to work at. Either way it’s worth visiting the store/restaurant/wherever and at least introducing yourself to the manager, the idea is you want them to remember your name while looking through their applications because there’s no real way to distinguish yourself otherwise due to how basic the job requirements are. It’s stupid you have to go through all that just to get a part-time, entry-level service industry job but that’s just kinda how it is, just keep applying and you should get something eventually.

I’ve applied for a couple dealerships too, with one being a major family-owned dealership with multiple manufacturers. I went to the dealer on Saturday and filled out an application; I’m pretty hopeful. I just need to follow up with them. I hope your employment expedition goes well, and you land yourself a job. A job is better than no job.

heres an idea for you. go to a local small airport like the kind that mainly serves small single engine piston aircraft and apply to be a line guy. basically its mowing grass/ fueling planes. for a HS kid its really not a bad gig plus theres a solid chance at scoring decent tips and maybe a ride or two in someones plane if you establish a good relationship with the frequent customers.

What did you do after your sent in your applications to any of those places? Did you call any of them or go visit in person and ask to speak to a manager?

Hiring managers get applications and resumes from people all the time. If you don't want to get lost in the shuffle, keep your name and your face known by contacting them again via phone calls, follow up emails, or in-person visits. Polite, professional persistence will get you a lot further than wishful thinking.

I got so lucky when the local Chevy dealer gave me a cashier job on Saturdays. I applied on a whim and the main reason I got it was my passion. Try and find the family owned dealers. I had no luck at the big corporate ones but this Chevy dealer has been family owned for decades. And I was 17 when I got the job.

Sometimes going in person helps a lot too.

Good luck!

Most car dealers in Memphis are either in the hood or too far away to make driving there worth it, unless you think I could get a job at a Caddy or Benz dealership.

I...well...drive. My job title is driver. Last summer I did the “pick entetprise, we’ll pick you up” thing from one of the branches, picking up customers from their houses or body shops. This summer, I’m on a driver team who restocks branches from the airport, shuttles cars in and out of repair, and collect deletes from all over the Raleigh-Durham area and bring them to our pre-sale lot.

You could also go the car prep/detailer route. You won’t be surrounded by the most intesting cars in the world, but if you get a driver position you at least get to thrash rental cars every day.

Ah, that’s a decent way to make a good first impression. In any case, it wouldn’t hurt to call them or drop by again after a week or two, and try to get hold of the manager or the one responsible for hiring, as SVTyler mentioned.

As far as job vs internship goes, it might be worth doing the internship if it’s in a field you like. It might pay less, but you’ll probably benefit in the long term, as it could put you onto an interesting career or study track. Although to be fair, if the internship isn’t more involved/challenging than a retail job, I’d probably just go for the best paying opportunity, especially as a junior.

I worked at a Chick-Fil-A near Raleigh, NC for just over a year, and they’re a great employer. Good management, good workmates (for my store at least, but most others tend to be the same), and it’s a good time. If you’re nice, say that working hard is a passion for you in the interview, and you don’t have a felony, you’re basically hired. They’re always looking for new people, and the turnover rate is fairly low. Plus, they don’t drug test if that’s your thing. I would recommend.

Apply again. I applied twice before I got a callback. Or find out when they’re holding an open interview (every CFA is required to do one per month), and go then. That’s how I got the job when I applied the second time. I started working there at 15, and I’m glad I did.

The only reason why I quit is because I was ready to move on. Funnily enough, they were planning to promote me next before I quit. That was a $2.50 per hour pay raise.

They also could be swamped with other summer appliers. I remember dozens of people applying last year, and all the people who looked as if they would work there did.

I’ve worked at two Chick-Fil-A stores and both times I got hired for walking in the door and asking for the manager.

They ask you your reasoning, you say to ask about an application, and if the store “Operator” (owner) is there, you talk to them. Shake their hand, introduce yourself, and chances are they’ll sit down with you right there if they:

1. Are indeed still hiring

2. You look presentable

3. Have the time

But your chances are pretty good of that happening.
